Baja Mexico fly fishing update and report posted on February 6th, 2012.

Hi Folks,

Things remain typical for this time of year here in the East Cape.  Our night time temperatures have been getting down in the low 50’s.  During the day we have been warming up quite nicely with our day time high temp’s in the mid to high 70’s.

We continue to see winds from the North here in the East Cape.  We received a little break from the wind late last week.  We had three days in a row that were very calm and beautiful.  That break did not last long.  We are back to the winds picking up each day around 9 A.M. and by noon they are at full force.

The winds have been on average blowing around 20mph. with higher gusts.  The forecast for this week is for the winds to be a little less early in the week.  On Thursday they are calling for the winds to pick up and be quite strong going into the end of the week and over the weekend.

With all the wind here in the East Cape the fishing (especially fly fishing) has been extremely tough.  If you pick the right day and get out extremely early we have had a pretty good showing of sierra.  Most of the fish have been found inshore and along the beach in the area between La Capilla and Los Pinos.  The fish have been active very early in the morning before the wind starts to kick up.

I have also heard of a few yellow tail being caught here close to home.  This is the time of year they should start showing up.  I know they are starting to show in pretty good numbers around Cabo San Lucas.  It sounds as if a few have made it here to the East Cape.  It will not be long until we see good numbers of them here in the East Cape.

With all the wind we have had here on the East Cape I have been running all my trips out of San Jose del Cabo as well as Cabo San Lucas.  I have had great fishing in both places this past week.

Out of San Jose we’ve had excellent fly fishing for bonita.  These fish have averaged around 10lbs. with fish as large as 20lbs..  We’ve also had a fair number of dorado showing up to the chum when fishing for the bonita.  We caught three dorado on Friday.  The dorado have been on average about 15lbs.  On Friday had some very nice yellow fin tuna mixed in with the bonita.  We hooked a couple but both of them broke off as we were very under gunned.  We were fishing 9wt. rods and they were not enough to stop the 30# yellow fin.

Out Of Cabo San Lucas I have been catching sierra with my client’s.  The fly fishing for sierra has been excellent this year.  The fish have not been huge, but they have been nice fly rod fish.  Most of the sierra have been in the 5-6# class with a few larger fish mixed in.

We have also been seeing a fair number of rooster fish out of Cabo San Lucas.  These fish have been moving around quite a bit.  We have had to search quite hard for them on some days.  Once you find them they are all quality fish.  Most of them have been between 10 -30#.

I am headed back over to San Jose del Cabo tomorrow morning to chase more bonita and dorado with my guests.  You can be sure I will have a few bigger rods rigged up for the yellow fin.  I will be sure to report back on how we do this week.

Until next time….Keep fly fishing!
