The fishing continues to be good throughout the bay. The bite for Tuna, Dorado, and Bonita remains very strong. This past week we have not had to travel as far to the south to find the fish as in previous weeks. The fish have slid all the way up the line and today were located right in front of La Ribera. It is always a bonus when you can start fishing ten minutes after getting on the boat. Most of the boats fished between one and two miles straight off La Ribera today and were rewarded with good action for Tuna and Dorado. Great numbers of big Bonita were mixed in as well.
Although we do have squid in the area the bait of choice for these fish has been sardina. We have plenty of them and the fish are coming from the deeper water to crash these bait fish on the surface. This makes it very good for the fly fishing angler. We are even catching them on top water poppers and crease flies using intermediate lines. This method has been providing us with great action. Not to mention it is a blast seeing a twenty pound Yellow Fin inhale a popper!
Along the beaches and inshore we continue to see smaller Rooster Fish and Jack Crevelle. Lady Fish, Pompano, and a few Pargo round out the catch. Fishing along the beaches has been best early in the mornings. I recommend fishing in the mornings due to the fact that currently we have had cloud cover and breezes in the afternoons. We received a few mid afternoon rain showers on Saturday and Sunday. A few of the boats came in a little early on Saturday as the rain showers that passed through the area caused some pretty rough seas. By dinner time on Saturday we were back to flat and gorgeous conditions.
The fishing is as good as we have seen in the past couple of years. If you have never fly fished Baja or have been fishing it for many years. It dose not get much better than this. Until next time…get out and go fishing.
