Fishing Report and Baja Activity Guide
Week
of - January 30th—February 5th 2006
Weather: This past week
was typical for the end of January, beginning of February. It
was cold in the mornings, with the North winds starting to show
themselves around 9:00 a.m. and blowing full force by 11:00 a.m. We
did see a couple of days that were fairly calm. The wind had just
a slight breeze, with clear skies and lots of sun.
Air temperatures: Low 51
High 74
Water temperatures: 65 to 71
Beach Fishing Report: Yet again, this
week the beach fishing remained very difficult. With the very cool
early morning temperatures and the North winds whipping, most
anglers decided to stay inside and stay under the covers during
the early morning hours.
Inshore Fishing Report: Not much to report.
The inshore fishing remains difficult. There continues
to be a few Sierra very early in the morning. Most have
reported that they fish from just before dawn untill sometime around
8:00a.m., as the winds start to build.
Offshore Fishing Report: This
week, during one of the calm days, a few of the boats (23
miles off-shore) foud a
large piece of floating wood, where they managed to catch a good
number of Dorado between 20 and 40 pounds. A few Tuna were also
caught—most of them being football size.
High-light of the Week: This week, I
fished with my client, Walter Gradek, and his son in-law, Matt. We
fished out of Cabo San Lucas on the 1st of February. Walter
and matt caught Red Snapper weighing up to twenty pounds. It
was some of the best Snapper fishing I have ever seen.
Week
of - January 22nd—29th 2006
Weather: This past week
we have seen a little of everything. We have had the North winds
continue bringing sunny skies for most of the week. Thursday (1-26)
we started to see the effects of a front moving in, bringing scattered
clouds and slightly cooler temperatures. Friday, we woke up to overcast
skies and rain. Yes that is correct—rain. The rain continued
throughout Friday, but by Saturday morning we were back to normal,
with bright sunny skies and a slight wind out from the North.
Air temperatures: Low 50
High 76
Water temperatures: 66 to 73
Beach Fishing Report: This week fishing
from the beach continued to be very difficult. The heavy surf that
constantly pounded the shoreline for the better part of this past
week made most anglers, looking to fish the beach, decide to stay
under the covers and catch a few more winks during those early morning
hours.
Inshore Fishing Report: This week the
Sierra bite was very good for the early morning anglers that were
fishing from the areas between Hotel Palmas de Cortez and continuing
North past the slides. Most of the anglers reported that the bite
started before dawn and was over as the wind started to build around
9:00a.m.
Offshore Fishing Report: We still have
a few Dorado scattered around with most being found closer to shore.
We have also heard of a Billfish or two being caught, along with
the occasional Football Tuna.
High-light of the Week: With the North
wind continuing here in the East Cape this past week, I decided
to take my guests over to the Pacific side and fished them out of
Cabo San Lucas in order to escape the wind. Hutch Hutchinson and
his wife Page had a wonderful few days fishing with me on the Pacific
side, where they were able to catch quite a few different species
and good numbers of each. They were able to bend their fly rods
on Yellow Fin Tuna, Dorado, Sierra, Pompano, Lady Fish, and three
different kinds of Snapper. They said they will defiantly be back
this spring to do some fishing off the beaches here in East Cape,
as soon as the North winds decide to calm for the year.
Week
of - January 15th—22nd 2006
Weather: This past week
we have seen the return of the strong North winds. These winds blew
for most of the week, only giving us one day (1/19) at sea without
victory. In addition to the winds, we have had very chilly nights
and early mornings, with our afternoons warming to very comfortable
temperatures.
Air temperatures: Low 51
High 74
Water temperatures: 66 to 73
Beach Fishing Report: With the waves
pounding the shoreline for a better part of a week, it was very
difficult, if not impossible, to fish the beach this week without
being slammed in the chest every five seconds by an incoming cold
wave. I am waiting for a fishable morning, as we have had good numbers
of sierra, along with a few lady fish and even the occasional Pargo
mixed in when fishing among the rocks.
Inshore Fishing Report: This week the
very few that dared to brave the elements and try their luck in
the very early morning (before the wind kicked back up after never
truly settling overnight) were rewarded with sierra and a few white
Bonita.
Offshore Fishing Report: On the one calm
day we had this week, the boats that went out found an active school
of Porpoise with a fair number of football size yellow fin Tuna
between 8 and 12 lbs.
High-light of the Week: If you are a
wind surfer and are not here, you are missing some great action!
For those of us who are anglers, we will just have to wait and see
what the up-coming week will bring us.
