Week of - May 13th - May 19th 2007

Weather: This past week we once again saw great weather.  A few of the mornings this week we started out with some fog in the area giving us a slight breeze at times but by ten in the morning it was all burned off giving us flat calm seas and plenty of sunshine.

Beach Fishing Report: This past week the beach fishing was full of shots for my guest Eric Burnett.  Eric and I spent one of the three days he fished with me on the beach.  Eric and I covered a lot of beach and got a fair number of shots at some good roosters and jacks.  The fish seem to be spread out all over our beaches and are by no means concentrated in a certain area.  Most of the fish are chasing mullet because the sardines in the area have disappeared.  The bait pangas are finding none in the area although I did hear of a few being caught today down South.  Once again this week if you are willing to get out and put some time in and walk our beaches you will get some shots.  I want to say do not expect to have the beaches to yourself as we are seeing more and more people carrying fly rods sprinting up and down our beaches chasing fish.  I counted fourteen fly fisherman fishing from the light house to Punta Colorado and another seven from La Ribera North and this is just one day this past week.  Through out most of this week it was very hard to find a spot to fish a beach where you did not feel you were intruding on someone else’s space or they were not intruding on yours.  

Inshore Fishing Report: This past week the inshore fishing was difficult for us that were trying to fly fish because the lack of sardines for chum.  We still have fish around but without the sardines for chum we had to use the mackerel and mullet that are available and use them as teaser baits to get some of the big jacks and roosters in the area up so we could cast flies to them.  Some of the boats from the hotel this week caught some very nice pompano, jacks, roosters, cabrilla, pargo and a few other species using bait.

Offshore Fishing Report: This past week the action for the yellow fin tuna was scattered at best.  We are still seeing schools of porpoise anywhere from twelve to fifty six miles out.  Some of these schools are holding yellow fin and it seemed to be sort of a hit and miss week for the yellow fin but if you found them and they were willing to bite some very nice fish up to forty pounds were a possibility.  We have scattered marlin throughout the bay and again some boats are finding some that want to eat and others seem to have lock jaw.  The dorado fishing remains scattered as well with mostly single fish being caught unless you were lucky enough to find some sort of trash in the water and if you were lucky multiple fish may have been found.

Week of - May 6th-May 12th 2007

Weather: This past week the weather was fantastic.  We had mornings that were warm and very calm giving us very flat sea conditions starting out each day.  Most of this week as the fishing day progressed we saw a slight breeze from the south giving us a slight chop on the water.  This breeze was welcomed by all as it was very refreshing.  We did not see much in the way of cloud cover this past week giving us plenty of sun.

Beach Fishing Report: This past week the beach fishing was good thru out the week.  This past week we have seen an increase in mullet along the beach but we have also seen a decrease in the sardines.  This increase in mullet has brought some very nice jacks and roosters closer to shore.  If you are willing to spend the time and get out their and walk some of the beaches you will get some good shots.  My guest Steve Landy and I have spent the last two days out on the beach and Steve got a very big jack yesterday.  This fish was about forty pounds.  Steve and I spent all afternoon today turning some very nice roosterfish and hooking another big jack that came off the hook after a short fight. 

Inshore Fishing Report: This past week the inshore fishing was excellent.  My guests Gerry and Kitty Wiemelt from Arizona and I spent three days fishing inshore from a panga and found lot’s of great fishing.  On the first day out we found a school of very big ladyfish that were willing to give a tug on the line.  Gerry and Kitty were hooting and hollering as they had ladyfish ripping fly line off their reels as soon as their flies hit the water.  On the second day of fishing we found a school of nice jacks that were willing to play.  Gerry landed a few very nice jacks and Kitty had a few on but was having a hard time getting thru the ladyfish that also showed up.  As we were fishing kitty had something take her fly and she was into the backing before she could blink.  We all thought it was a nice big jack but after a great fight of about twenty minutes it turned out to be a very nice twelve pound Barred Pargo.  On the third day we found a nice big school of medium sized rooster fish that were willing to eat flies.  Gerry and Kitty caught not only their first rooster fish but many others as well.  Between the two of them we were able to catch and release thirteen rooster fish.  Gerry and Kitty had a great trip.  They are already talking about coming back this August.

Offshore Fishing Report: This past week the action for the yellow fin tuna was halted by a couple of commercial tuna boats that were in the area.  After they were run off by the Mexican government the fishing for the tuna picked back up late in the week.  Fishing for marlin continues to be very good with a good number of fish in the area.  We also have quite a few sail fish in the area as well.  The fishing for dorado is spotty but we have seen a few nice fish and if you are lucky you might find something in the water giving the dorado some cover.  One boat this week found a piece of plywood.  They were able to get fifteen or so dorado from under it and a couple of those fish were over forty pounds.

Week of - April 30th - May 6th 2007

Weather: We had excellent weather all week.  We had a few mornings that were slightly on the chilly side with slightly over cast skies but with in an hour or so of the sun getting above the horizon the clouds burned off giving us sunny skies and perfect temperatures. We saw wonderful sea conditions as well  with flat calm seas in the mornings followed by a slight breeze from the South in the afternoon that created perfect fishing conditions.

Beach Fishing Report: This past week the beach fishing picked up once again as we saw roosterfish along with lady fish and jacks all caught from the beach.  My guide lance Peterson had Garrett Gill and his friend Clay out on the beach for a day as they were part of a group of eight from the Chase Lumber Company that visited us for their annual fishing trip.  Garrett and clay had very good action all day.  Clay had never caught a roosterfish and he had landed four before lunch.  Garrett was not far behind as he brought a few to had as well.  As the morning turned into afternoon they were able to cast to some very nice sized roosters and jacks turning a few but could not fool the bigger fish into eating their fly.  The beach is starting to heat up once more and as we start to see more bait along our beaches we should start to see more fish. 

Inshore Fishing Report: This past week the inshore fishing was very good.  We saw some bigger roosterfish this past week that seemed to want to hang just in a little deeper water than those caught from shore.  These fish have been located by the bird schools that are circling above them and swooping down as the roosters push and chase the bait to the surface.  We have not only seen some nice roosters inshore but we also saw some nice jacks as well.  Jim from the Chase Lumber group hooked a very nice jack on his eight weight rod with in the first hour of fishing.  Jim and his friend Mike continued to catch jacks and lady fish until they said mercy from pulling on so many fish.

Offshore Fishing Report: This past week the action for the yellow fin tuna in the area has been very good.  Two of the boys from the Chase lumber group went out on a panga one day during their trip and boated fifteen yellow fin tuna ranging from five to forty pounds and one stripe marlin.  They were back at the hotel sitting by the pool before eleven in the morning!!  We continue to see very good action for bill fish.  We have stripe marlin and sail fish in the area that have been willing to come into the teasers giving us very good shots casting flies to them.  We continue to see dorado in the area as well.  Most of the dorado that were caught this pas week were large bulls that seemed to be swimming by themselves.  This past week we did not as many of the smaller dorado that run in schools giving us a chance to cast a fly the them.  With any luck they will return shortly.  We also have had some nice skip jack action as well.
       
High-light of the Week: I would like to say thank you to the entire Chase Lumber group that fished with us this past week.  It will be a week that we will remember for a long time.
