Baja Mexico Fly Fishing Report – Mucho Marlin in February

Hi folks,

This past week we have had excellent fishing in both the East Cape as well as Cabo San Lucas. It has been a great week with action on the Sea of Cortez as well as the Pacific.

In the East Cape we have had some outstanding action for stripe marlin. The action has been going on for the last couple of weeks and shows no signs of slowing down. The fish are fairly close to shore and seem to be almost everywhere and not just on a bank here or there.

The marlin have been most active on the tide changes. This means during slack tide you may find more dorado and skip jack than marlin but if you are patient once the tide turns the marlin have been feeding heavily.

Along the beach in the East Cape we continue to see good fishing for roosters and jacks with a few small Bonita and Sierra mixed in. We have been seeing very good schools just offshore and a lot of them have been a mixture of jacks and roosters together. These have been larger fish. They have been feeding on the bait balls that we currently have in the area. Closer to shore we are seeing fish but they have been smaller than the groups a little further out.

I have been guiding here in Cabo most of this week and the fishing has been very good. We have had good fishing for some nice roosters along with Sierra and Cubera snapper. The schools of jacks in the Pacific are everywhere. We encountered a school yesterday that must have stretched a quarter of a mile long. These fish have not been the easiest to catch as some of them are spawning. If you encounter the right school and they respond hold on because they will attack any fly in the area.

I will be in the water both in the East Cape as well as Cabo this coming week. I will be sure to update all of you on the action. Until then I hope you find some time to get out and go fishing.

Week of February 1st 2018

Hi everyone,

Currently here in the East Cape we are in the windy season. With that said on the non windy days we do have a little going on. If you are up early and the wind is down we have had good action from the beach for Sierra. This bite has been starting around dawn and ending around 9am.

We are also seeing good numbers on small roosters along the beach on the calm days. These fish are not big. They are averaging between 1 and 3 pounds but they sure are fun.

We have not seen any jacks yet but they should start to show soon as we have good bait along the beaches currently.

Offshore here in the East Cape we are seeing a good marlin bite for this time of year. The marlin have been on the bank just off La Ribera. We also have a few dorado in the area and the occasional tuna. A few yellowtail are starting to show as well. Again it all depends on the wind here in the East Cape this time of year.

I have been guiding a lot lately on the Pacific side out of Cabo San Lucas. Over there we have had very good inshore fishing for jack’s, roosters, snapper, and Sierra. This is a great time to be fishing inshore on the pacific side.

Off shore out of Cabo we have been doing well on stripe marlin with fair action for dorado. The bite for dorado has been early while the marlin have been more active for us fly anglers in the afternoon.

This year has started off with some great fishing. Currently the conditions are favorable for some great action over the next few weeks. Stay tuned for the latest news as we will be fishing the next few days and we will be sure to report the latest conditions. If you are in the area or going to be in the area or just want to escape winter for a few days give us a call. We would love to help you.

Tight lines,

Jeff

Week of November 1st

Hi All,
Over the last few weeks the fishing has continued to stay pretty consistent. Nice weather overall in the east cape, but it is slowing down. Went out a few days ago and found some dorado, tuna and a few billfish from the boat. The beach is fishing OK, but not great. Cabo is the place to be right now. Cabo has some solid rooster fish, marlin and a few dorado in the mix as well. The water temps are continuing to drop and with it the marlin bite will go into full swing. Mag bay was incredible a few weeks ago. several boats reported hooking up with 50+ marlin a day. The fall is the main season for some of our best fly fishing for bill fish. Our focus will be between Cabo and Mag bay for balance of November through December.

The Reel Baja does still have a few openings over the winter season so please call ASAP if you need information. This fall is shaping up to be one of the best we have seen in the past couple years for marlin.  If you want to be part of the action come se us.

Week of September 1st.

Hi All,

HOT!!  It is in the mid to upper 90’s and beautiful. Looking at things overall  there are no storms in site,  or rain that I can see for the near future. We may have the occasional afternoon rain shower in the mountains, but as far as something to worry about it looks good and we are set for great fishing conditions.

Beach Fishing:

Spent the entire week last week on the beach. There are some very nice fish around but you need to be patient and the shots will come. We saw some decent numbers early in the week but as the week progressed we saw less and less. The last two days have been tough with us only seeing a few fish. As we go into the next full moon we expect this to pick up and see more fish on the beaches.

Inshore:

Seeing some decent action for tuna using chunk squid. These guys have been very tough to get on the fly as it’s hard to “drift” a fly that slow, but it’s doable at times. We are also seeing some decent numbers for small to medium dorado fairly close to shore. The areas around the light house and just past Cabo Pulmo have been the best. There are also some in Buenavista.

We are also seeing some decent fishing for rooster fish using live bait with no hook doing a bait and switch. They are not big fish and not seeing huge numbers but enough to make it fun.

Offshore:

The billfish bite continues to be excellent. It has been a very, very good year here in Baja for billfish. There are some tuna with porpoise if you can find them as well as the occasional bigger dorado.

On a side note. I got an email letting me know Mag Bay is fishing extremely well right now for marlin. Lot’s of bait balls with lot’s of marlin on them. It should only get better as the season progresses. There are dorado and wahoo there as well and we’re very excited about getting tied up with them soon.

Jeff,
