Last week we had a storm brewing off the coast. Overall the storm only brought in a bit of rain and no damage due to the wind. Over the last week, the water has been clearing up nicely. The dorado bite that was wide open a few weeks ago has tapered off but there are still some nice fish around. In the next few weeks, we expect the dorado bite to be solid.

On the outside:  a few boats have been coming in with marlin flags plus the tuna bite is strong offshore. However, it’s a long ride out to find them, but when you do the action is exciting.

On the inside: Roosters are cruising the beaches and several grande fish have been sen this week. We had a few exciting chases but the fish are spooky. In the mix is big jacks inshore. We saw several in the 50lb range this last week. Several dates are open July-August if anyone is considering coming down now is the time to book. We are out this week with clients so look out for some great pics coming soon.

Had a little wind from the North for a couple days this last week which was strange for this time of year.

The beach has been OK.  A few fish are around and the crowds were out in full force but it’s not overwhelming. Overall there is a great mix of species right now. Small roosters in the marina, plus Jacks, and snappers as well.

Outside we are seeing great dorado & marlin fishing as well. The pompano fishing has been nothing but fantastic this last week. Bigger roosters are further out but very picky. When we do get one to eat its a ton of fun.

Lots of tuna 30 & 40 miles out with porpoise. Close to home, we are finding tuna off the lighthouse fishing sinking lines and finding a 45 pounders in the mix.

Fishing is only going to get better as the sardines show up and the wind drops off as we hit the beaches sight fishing roosters and jacks. Grande rooster season is here. Every week we will see more & more fish on the beaches.  If anyone has questions please feel free to give us a call and we will be happy to discuss availability.

Tight lines,

Jeff

Baja Mexico Fly Fishing Report – Mucho Marlin in February

Hi folks,

This past week we have had excellent fishing in both the East Cape as well as Cabo San Lucas. It has been a great week with action on the Sea of Cortez as well as the Pacific.

In the East Cape we have had some outstanding action for stripe marlin. The action has been going on for the last couple of weeks and shows no signs of slowing down. The fish are fairly close to shore and seem to be almost everywhere and not just on a bank here or there.

The marlin have been most active on the tide changes. This means during slack tide you may find more dorado and skip jack than marlin but if you are patient once the tide turns the marlin have been feeding heavily.

Along the beach in the East Cape we continue to see good fishing for roosters and jacks with a few small Bonita and Sierra mixed in. We have been seeing very good schools just offshore and a lot of them have been a mixture of jacks and roosters together. These have been larger fish. They have been feeding on the bait balls that we currently have in the area. Closer to shore we are seeing fish but they have been smaller than the groups a little further out.

I have been guiding here in Cabo most of this week and the fishing has been very good. We have had good fishing for some nice roosters along with Sierra and Cubera snapper. The schools of jacks in the Pacific are everywhere. We encountered a school yesterday that must have stretched a quarter of a mile long. These fish have not been the easiest to catch as some of them are spawning. If you encounter the right school and they respond hold on because they will attack any fly in the area.

I will be in the water both in the East Cape as well as Cabo this coming week. I will be sure to update all of you on the action. Until then I hope you find some time to get out and go fishing.

Week of February 1st 2018

Hi everyone,

Currently here in the East Cape we are in the windy season. With that said on the non windy days we do have a little going on. If you are up early and the wind is down we have had good action from the beach for Sierra. This bite has been starting around dawn and ending around 9am.

We are also seeing good numbers on small roosters along the beach on the calm days. These fish are not big. They are averaging between 1 and 3 pounds but they sure are fun.

We have not seen any jacks yet but they should start to show soon as we have good bait along the beaches currently.

Offshore here in the East Cape we are seeing a good marlin bite for this time of year. The marlin have been on the bank just off La Ribera. We also have a few dorado in the area and the occasional tuna. A few yellowtail are starting to show as well. Again it all depends on the wind here in the East Cape this time of year.

I have been guiding a lot lately on the Pacific side out of Cabo San Lucas. Over there we have had very good inshore fishing for jack’s, roosters, snapper, and Sierra. This is a great time to be fishing inshore on the pacific side.

Off shore out of Cabo we have been doing well on stripe marlin with fair action for dorado. The bite for dorado has been early while the marlin have been more active for us fly anglers in the afternoon.

This year has started off with some great fishing. Currently the conditions are favorable for some great action over the next few weeks. Stay tuned for the latest news as we will be fishing the next few days and we will be sure to report the latest conditions. If you are in the area or going to be in the area or just want to escape winter for a few days give us a call. We would love to help you.

Tight lines,

Jeff
